LG

LG has hopped on the Ultrabook bandwagon with its introduction of the super-thin XNote Z330 laptop. It looks strikingly similar to the Apple MacBook Air, and unfortunately also comes with a similar premium price tag.

Like other Ultrabooks, the XNote Z330 is a 13.3 inch laptop featuring a second-generation Intel Core processor and a solid state drive. Two models will be available: The Z330-GE55K will offer a Core i7 processor and 256GB of storage, while the Z330-GE30K will have the Core i5 processor and 120GB SSD.

LG has highlighted a few standout features of its Ultrabook: a boot up time under 10 seconds, thanks to “Rapid Start Technology,” and a narrow bezel for maximum display size of 12 inches.

Thin and light are the name of the Ultrabook game, and the Z330 doesn’t disappoint there, with a thickness of just 14.7mm (0.58 inches) and weight of 1.82kg (2.65 pounds). This makes the Z330 the thinnest Ultrabook to date, but not by much: the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s is also razor-thin, measuring 0.59 inches at its tapered edge.

Importantly, the Z330 is thinner and lighter than the ultraportable it’s a clone of: The MacBook Air is 0.68 inches thick and weighs 2.96 pounds

The thin bezel on the LG P220 is going to attract a lot of people. 12.5" screen in a 11.6" frame is usable and stylish. At 21mm deep this sits just outside the target thickness for an Ultrabook. The LG Xnote P220 launches firs in Korea with 2 variants. The 320GB HDD version and a 128 SSD version. It is unknown if the 320HDD comes with SSD cache to speed up boot time. If not, this isn't an Ultrabook. Certainly none of the marketing materials so far have mentioned the 'Ultrabook.'

Specifications, some of which can be guessed at from the photos provided, include HDMI (streams video to an auxiliary monitor or HDTV), USB (even a dedicated charging port) and a bezel width of 9.5 mm, plus maximum thickness of 20.9 mm (weight if 1.3 kilograms).

LG hasn't revealed too many details about the chips that will be available, but these are expected to be ultra-low voltage parts, since this decision should enable the Korean company to increase the battery life of the P220.

According to the manufacturer, battery life is estimated at a maximum of 5.5 hours, but, unfortunately, we don't know whether the Xnote P220 comes with a removable power pack or not. The Xnote P220 weights roughly 2.9 pounds and is less than an inch thick (0.82 inches to be more precise).
